How long do termites live? Workers, soldiers and queens

The short answer depends on the caste. The useful answer is about the colony, which keeps going when individuals die.

The short answer: it depends on the caste

A worker or soldier termite lives for months to a few years. A queen lives much longer, often for many years. Exact figures vary by species and conditions, and published numbers differ, so treat any single number with care.

The honest answer is that the individual matters less than the colony. A colony replaces its members all the time.

Lifespan by caste

CasteJobHow long it tends to live
WorkerFeeds the colony, builds tubes, eats timberShort: months to a few years
SoldierDefends the colonyShort, like workers
Winged reproductive (alate)Leaves to start a new colonyHours to days outside the nest, unless it founds a colony
QueenLays the eggsLong: many years, with the king alongside her

Why the colony matters more than the termite

Workers die and are replaced. The queen keeps laying. So a colony in the ground can feed on timber for years, long after any one worker has gone.

That is the point for a homeowner. Waiting for termites to "die off" is not a plan. Activity stops when the colony is dealt with, not when individual insects age.

What this means for your house

A small amount of visible activity can be the front edge of a large, old colony. A queen may be in a nest well away from the building, in a stump, a tree or the ground. Our guide on what a termite is explains the castes in more detail.

Swarming winged termites are the one short-lived stage you will notice. They show that a mature colony is close. They do not show where it is feeding.

What not to do

  • Do not wait for them to die. The colony replaces its workers, and damage continues meanwhile.
  • Do not break the mud tubes or spray. The colony moves its feeding route and the damage carries on out of sight. The inspector also reads that evidence.
  • Do not try to treat it yourself. Termiticides are registered by the APVMA and applied by a licensed pest management technician.

What to do instead

Book a timber pest inspection to AS 4349.3 with a licensed inspector. Leave any evidence untouched. Ask how they know whether the activity is current. Then let the licensed technician manage it.

Frequently asked questions

How long do worker termites live?

Usually months to a few years, depending on the species and conditions. The colony replaces them continuously.

How long does a termite queen live?

Much longer than workers, often many years. Published figures vary by species, so no single number applies to your property.

Will termites die off on their own?

No. Individuals die, but the colony replaces them. Activity ends when a licensed technician manages the colony.

Do swarming termites live long?

Most do not. Winged reproductives live only hours to days unless one pair founds a new colony.
