White Ant Guide is operated by an individual based in Spain and is written for readers in Australia. The operator is a publisher, not a tradesperson: this site does not carry out, arrange, broker or supervise pest control, termite inspection or building work of any kind, anywhere.
What this site is
White Ant Guide publishes independent, general-interest explanations of termites and the other timber pests of Australian homes: what a piece of evidence usually means, what a timber pest inspection does and does not cover, how the treatment strategies differ, and where the job stops being a homeowner's and becomes licensed work.
What this site is not — please read this one
Nothing on this site is professional advice, and it is not a substitute for an inspection by a licensed timber pest inspector or for treatment by a licensed pest management technician. It is general information written without knowledge of your property, your construction, your species or your circumstances. We do not identify termite species from photographs and nothing here should be read as an identification.
In Australia, the application of termiticides is regulated: products must be registered by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) and are applied under licence, with pest management licensing set by each state and territory. Timber pest inspections are carried out to Australian Standards, and termite management systems are installed under AS 3660 and the National Construction Code. Licensing requirements and the boundary between homeowner maintenance and licensed work are matters for your own state or territory regulator. Where we describe that boundary we do so in general terms and point you at your regulator — we do not certify what is legal for you.
A product label is a legal document in Australia, and it always takes precedence over anything published here. If information on this site conflicts with a product label, with an Australian Standard. Or with the advice of a licensed inspector or technician who has actually examined your property, follow them and not us.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the operator accepts no liability for loss, damage or injury arising from action taken. Or not taken, on the basis of material published on this site. You use the information here at your own risk and on your own judgement.
Prices, rebates and running costs
As a matter of editorial policy, this site does not publish prices, quotes or figures for inspections, treatments or repairs. They vary by state, by property, by infestation and by year, and a figure left on a web page becomes misleading with time. Where money is relevant we explain what drives it and what to ask for.
Insurance and contracts
This site explains, in general terms, that home building policies in Australia commonly exclude damage caused by termites, and what a pre-purchase timber pest report is for. It does not interpret your policy, your building contract or your contract of sale. Wordings differ between insurers and products, and rights differ between states and between contracts. Those questions are for your insurer, your broker, your conveyancer or solicitor, or your state's consumer affairs or fair trading body.
Affiliate links and independence
Some links to retailers may be affiliate links, meaning the operator may earn a small commission if you buy through them, at no additional cost to you. Where that applies it is marked on the page. Affiliate arrangements do not influence what is recommended, and the operator has no commercial relationship with any pest control company, inspector, installer, manufacturer, brand or trade association.
Intellectual property
The text, structure, design and original graphics of this site belong to the operator unless stated otherwise. You are welcome to quote briefly with attribution and a link. Wholesale reproduction of pages is not permitted.
External links
This site links to external sources, including Australian government bodies, building regulators, health departments and standards bodies, so you can check what we say against the original. The operator does not control those sites and is not responsible for their content, their availability or any changes made to them after we linked. A link is not an endorsement.
If you find that a source we cite no longer says what we report it as saying, please write to hello@whiteantguide.com and the page will be corrected.
Corrections
