Do termites bite people?

They can. It almost never happens, and it is the wrong thing to worry about.

Yes, but it is rare

Termites have chewing mouthparts, so they are physically able to bite. In practice it hardly ever happens. Termites live hidden in soil, timber and their own tunnels, and they avoid open air and people.

When a bite does happen, it is a defensive nip. It is not an attack and it is not how termites find food.

Which termites would bite you

Soldiers. This caste has enlarged heads and mandibles, and its job is to defend the colony. If you open a mud tube, break into a gallery or knock a nest, soldiers rush out and can nip skin.

Workers and winged termites (alates) are not built to bite people. Alates cannot hurt you at all. They are a sign that a mature colony flew nearby, which is a reason for an inspection and nothing more.

What a bite is like

Most people feel little or nothing. Soldiers are small and their mandibles are made for other insects, not for skin. If you get a mark and a sore spot, treat it like any minor insect bite and see a doctor or pharmacist if it gets worse or you react badly.

We cannot tell you a bite is harmless for everyone. People react differently, so use common sense and get medical advice if you are unsure.

The real reason to care

If you were bitten by a termite, you were close to a colony. That means you have probably disturbed it. This matters far more than the bite itself, because a disturbed colony can close that route and reopen another somewhere you cannot see.

So stop, step back and leave it. Do not spray, do not break more of the tube or timber, and do not try to kill the soldiers. Spraying the insects you can see does not reach the colony and destroys the evidence an inspector needs.

What to do if one has bitten you

  • Move away and wash the area as you would for any bite.
  • Note exactly where it happened and photograph the spot from a distance.
  • If you can do it safely, keep a few insects in a sealed container.
  • Book a licensed timber pest inspection and tell them what you found.

Never identify the species yourself. That is done on soldier heads under magnification, which is another reason to hand over specimens rather than guess. Termite or ant: waist, antennae, wings covers the basic check, and the inspector does the rest. Leave the colony alone until then.

Frequently asked questions

Do termites bite humans?

They can, but it is rare. Soldiers may nip if their colony is disturbed. Workers and winged termites are not a biting problem.

Do flying termites bite?

Winged termites do not bite people as a defence. They are a sign that a mature colony is nearby, so book an inspection.

Should I be worried about a termite bite?

Treat it like a minor insect bite and seek medical advice if you react badly. The bigger issue is that you have probably disturbed a colony.

What should I do after finding termites that bite?

Step back, do not spray or break anything further, note the location and book a licensed timber pest inspection.
